Workshop Gender Data in the creative sector:
how to bridge the gap
Institute for Media Research, University of Rostock is organizing a Europe-wide workshop December 11th, 2020 from 9am to 12am. Online: Zoom-Meeting
Scope:
To provide input how to collect necessary statistical data on the gender data gap in the creative sector within Europe. Best practice example is the film industry, where some comparable EU-wide data exist (For example EWA Study 2017, or research from the European Audiovisual Observatory).
For the creative sectors: music, performance arts (including theatre, dance, and opera), visual arts, literature, and related professions, like museums heads.
How can we generate comparable EU wide data with the focus on:
- access to data about the gender distribution in the creative sector and arts labor market
- access to data about gender distribution in decision-making and leadership roles
- access to data about resources (funding) and the gender pay gap
Reasoning: “Clear lack of systematic data and approach per sector across Europe to collect this information”, according to the Working paper “Gender gaps in the Cultural and Creative Sectors – European Expert Network on Culture and Audiovisual (EENCA)”. There is a need for interdisciplinary research on gender equality and sharing best practices and examples between Member States.
Workshop with experts from the creative sector:
- What data do we need to evaluate gender parity in the culture sector?
- Why do we not have this data? What are the barriers and problems collecting the data?
- What would be the criteria for data collection?
- What solutions can we propose to close the data gap?
- How do we inform about data and share data?
Our workshop will bring together experts VIRTUALLY to determine what improvement of gender data is needed in the creative industries/art to establish gender parity. In a mixture of workshop and breakout session, our meeting will provide the opportunity to record this together.
