A short recap – looking back onto 23th April, a meeting of European Authors‘ Organisations in Brussels @MEDAA:
Working towards a brighter future for authors.
Already under the shadow of the at that time upcoming EU and Belgian Elections – the organisations representing European Authors and Creatives joined for a meeting at MEDAA, Brussels, on the initiative of Frédéric Young and Morgane Batoz-Herges as an opportunity to address key issues for authors, such as their IP rights and socio-economic status, artistic freedom, and the impact of generative AI on their work.
At the event organised on 23th April apart from EVA (European Visual Artists), ECSA (European Composer & Songwriter Alliance), FERA (Federation of European Screen Directors), SAA (Society of Audiovisual Authors), the EWC (European Writers’ Council) was also present.
We express our gratitude to Grazyna Plebanek from the Unia literacka for representing our federation. In her intervention she highlighted two key messages:
firstly, a beneficial and ethical development of legislation and regulations on (generative) AI under the EWC’s “ART Principle” (Authorisation – Remuneration – Transparency);
secondly, a stable EU framework in aspects of social and health security and freedom of creation, to build a sustainable future for the next generation of authors and artists.
It was very positive that when talking about the actual challenges the authors are facing in the current digital environment the importance of remuneration and transparency was highlighted by several representatives of European authors’ organisations to the participant candidates at the Belgian Federal and EU elections.
We thank Frédéric Young and Morgane Batoz-Herges for the initiative of putting on the agenda the priorities of the European organisations of the Maison européenne des Auteurs et des Autrices (MEDAA).
