The arrest of Boualem Sansal on 16 November 2024 on his arrival in Algiers is yet another example of the repression of intellectuals by regimes determined to stifle any form of criticism or dissent.
Charged with ‘undermining the integrity of national territory’ in Algeria, he faces a life sentence or even the death penalty.
At a time when fundamental freedoms, particularly freedom of expression, are increasingly under threat around the world, support for persecuted intellectuals must go beyond diplomatic considerations. We call on the French government, human rights organisations and the international intellectual community to campaign for the release of Boualem Sansal.
