THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL SITUATION OF BOOK AUTHORS IN FRANCE

2nd July 2019

A significant proportion of Agessa-affiliated authors of the book sector (18%) live in a household reporting less than €15,000 in net annual income (2013 return), all types of income combined.

While there are few differences between men and women on this indicator, the youngest (under 34) and those living alone are significantly more present in households reporting less than €15,000 net annually.

November 2019

As a reminder, 10% of French households declare less than €10,503 of annual income (Source: INSEE 2015): the proportion of low-income households therefore appears to be higher among the population of affiliated book authors than among other segments of society.

On the other hand, while only 10% of French households report more than €37,236 in annual income, 26% of the book’s affiliated authors live in households reporting incomes above €51,000 net annually.
Finally, while the median (value that divides the population into two equal parts) of French household incomes is €29,540, among the population of affiliated respondent authors, 53.2% live in households reporting more than €30,000 per year net.
