The Coalition acts as a multi-stakeholder network joining forces to strengthening cooperation to promote literacy and reading in Europe. The initiative is part of the European Commission and its Union of “Skills strategy and Action Plan on Basic Skills” and gathers 40 stakeholders – with EWC as main body for the writers’ and translators’ perspectives, represented by EWC Board Member Dr Conor Kostick.
The European Literacy Coalition kicked off with a first deep dive meeting on 6 and 7 May 2026 at the invitation of the European Commission in Warsaw, followed by the official launch of the European Literacy Coalition in Brussels on 22 and 23 September 2026, where Conor Kostick delivered the Key Note (To the report).
The Memorandum of the Coalition is addressed to the European institutions, to the governments and public authorities of the Member States, and to organisations and individuals with a stake in literacy across Europe. It is a starting point that the Coalition will complete and expand upon as its work develops.
