ASOS – Association of Slovak Authors / Slovak Writers’ Association – a brief description

What challenges, current and future, do you consider more important?
Slovakia is a country with five million inhabitants which has experienced two totalitarian regimes, fascist and communist. The remnants of these regimes have openly impacted memory, even produced false reminiscences, which have resulted in social division. Therefore, in the organisation, ASOS pays attention to democratic values as a top priority for all of our activities. Especially these days, when Slovakias country borders the invaded Ukraine and pro-Russian and anti-democratic narratives are spreading covertly and openly in our society.

Naturally, ASOS also perceives European challenges. The use of artificial intelligence without respect for the copyright of writers is one of them. In the development of artificial intelligence and also social networks, further circumvention of copyright is to be expected. We are already witnessing that algorithms create “works of art”. ASOS believes that
the takeover of human creativity by digital algorithms is one of the greatest challenges facing us today.
Why did you join the EWC and what are your expectations?
ASOS considers the EWC to be a respected institution and very necessary for a common voice for writers from many countries. ASOS is aware that writers in different countries face many similar problems, therefore a common voice is very necessary. The Slovak Writers’ Association can contribute to common topics through our exceptional members and also with the authority of the ASOS organisation.
The strength of the EWC lies in building a synergistic effect.
ASOS also feels strengthened by its membership in the EWC. This membership has confirmed to us that our efforts to formulate and express ourselves on common topics are of great importance, which ASOS highly values. ASOS is convinced that the membership will open up space for vis a vis other organisations associated with the EWC as well as its members and colleagues as well as open a vital path for mutual multilateral cooperation.
